Editor: This is a coin of Seleukos I of Syria, from Seleukeia, currently held at the Harvard Art Museums. It's quite worn, but I find its age and the fact that it was once used by someone fascinating. What stands out to you? Curator: I see a potent symbol of power. Notice how the animal depicted might be a bull or a lion; these evoke strength, leadership, and the foundational values of a kingdom. A coin like this carries the weight of Seleukos's ambition and lasting legacy. What do you think this object would have meant to those who handled it daily? Editor: I hadn't considered the animals as symbols of power! I was just thinking about it as money. Curator: Indeed, its value went beyond mere currency. It was a constant reminder of who ruled, what they valued, and the very image they wished to project. Editor: That's so interesting; I'll never look at old coins the same way again.
