Gerrit Dou painted this self-portrait in the Dutch Republic, using oil on panel, a common medium at the time. What is fascinating is the effect of luminosity that Dou achieves with this common medium. Note the velvety texture of the hat, the soft glow of the skin, and the sheen on the fur, rendered with meticulous detail. This wasn't achieved quickly. Dou was known for working slowly, painstakingly layering the paint to create the illusion of depth and texture. It was a laborious process, but one that made his paintings highly sought after. The work that went into this painting is significant. In the 17th century, artistic skill was akin to a form of craft. The value placed on the painting was determined not only by the artist’s vision, but by the time, expertise, and labor that it embodied. Seen in this light, Dou’s self-portrait transcends the traditional boundaries between fine art and craft.
