This carpet design was crafted by Otto Eckmann around the turn of the century. Notice the stars, scattered across the field within a looping chain. The star, a symbol of guidance and destiny, has shone brightly across cultures, from ancient Babylonian astrology to the Christian star of Bethlehem. Here, the stars are softened, almost blurred, suggesting a dreamlike state, inviting contemplation. We find echoes of this symbolism in earlier celestial maps and tapestries, where stars charted not just the heavens but also the human spirit's yearning for meaning. The meandering border pattern, reminiscent of flowing water or perhaps a serpent's path, adds another layer. Serpents appear as symbols of healing and transformation, shedding their skin to be reborn. Consider the emotional resonance of these motifs: the comforting presence of stars offering direction.
