Alexander Calder created this gouache painting, Constellations, in 1973, using simple shapes and a playful composition, it gives me a feeling of lightness. The red background feels like an active space in which the different colored circles float, creating a dynamic balance. I can almost imagine Calder moving his arm as he applied the paint, embracing a freedom with the brushstrokes in each circle. The spirals, formed by alternating dark and light lines, create a sense of movement and depth. Look at how the blue circle is defined by a thin white outline! It really pops against the red. This reminds me a little of Joan Miro, but Calder brings his own spin, embracing a kind of imperfect perfection. It’s like he’s inviting us to see the world with childlike wonder, full of endless possibilities and surprises.
