Isaac Weissenbruch made this print, entitled 'Zes wespen,' using etching, a printmaking technique that democratized image production. The image is made by drawing into a waxy ground with a sharp needle, exposing the metal plate beneath. Acid then bites into these exposed lines. This process is repeated to achieve different line weights before inking and printing. The resulting image is characterized by crisp, precise lines and a tactile quality imparted by the etched surface. Weissenbruch was working at a time of intense industrialization, yet embraced a traditional craft. The level of detail in the image reminds us that craft-based modes of production allow for close attention and care, and the depiction of wasps invites the viewer to carefully observe nature. This work therefore prompts us to reconsider the value of detailed, skilled making.
