Editor: This photograph by Bill Dane is called Untitled (Alameda). There's no date listed, but it feels like a snapshot from the '70s. It's pretty small and printed in black and white. What do you see in this scene? Curator: It feels like a flea market portrait. The symmetry of the mirrors offset by the casual poses of the women is compelling. It's like Dane is asking, "What are we selling, and who are we becoming in the process?" The mundane mixed with aspirations of beauty, perhaps? Editor: That's a thought. I didn't consider the 'becoming' part. Curator: Photography has a way of freezing those in-between moments, doesn't it? Reminds me of Sontag's thoughts about photography and collecting.
