This print, made in 1875 by Johan Michaël Schmidt Crans, is a response to public outrage over a previous cartoon about the 200th anniversary of the Portuguese Synagogue. Made with simple ink on paper, the means of production are as straightforward as the message is pointed. We see a chaotic scene filled with braying donkeys and squawking geese. The furious animals represent the public outcry, their exaggerated features and frantic energy conveying the intensity of the reaction. The artist's choice of printmaking – a readily reproducible medium – underscores the widespread nature of the controversy. The relatively quick and efficient process of creating prints allowed for the rapid dissemination of his commentary to a broad audience. Looking closely, the cross-hatching and varied line weights bring depth and texture to the image. The artist uses these basic graphic techniques to transform simple lines into potent social commentary. This reminds us that even the humblest of materials can be the vehicle for powerful expression.
