This photograph of a building in an unknown place was made at an unknown time by an anonymous artist. It's a study in grey tones, a limited palette that somehow expands the sense of space. Look at the front of the building, the doorway in particular. It’s a dark void in the very center, balanced by the bush in the foreground. Our anonymous artist has framed that black shape with repeated doorways and posts. It has a very quiet feel. It makes me think about Sol Lewitt. Not for any formal similarity, but more a shared interest in modularity and repetition. Both artists are interested in subtle shifts of visual information. This image is a kind of meditation. It shows us how repeated, small actions can create the whole, inviting us to see the world in new, expansive, and exciting ways.
