Richard Paul Lohse made this painting with oil on canvas, its title is a bit of a mouthful, roughly translating to ‘Movement of 4 Contrasting Groups From One Centre’. The paint here is super smooth, almost like it's been ironed on. There’s no texture, no brushstrokes, just these blocks of colour doing their thing. It's kind of mesmerizing how the colours bounce off each other, with each band both pulling you in and pushing you outwards. I keep thinking about that teeny red rectangle in the very centre. It's like the whole thing is breathing in and out from that point. The colours are so precise that they feel almost mechanical, yet there's something so human about the way they interact. It makes me think of Josef Albers and how he explored colour relationships, but Lohse's got this extra zing, a little bit of controlled chaos happening. I think that perfectly embodies the spirit of art which thrives on continuous dialogue and differing opinions.
