Untitled (three men standing) 1952
Dimensions 12.7 x 10.16 cm (5 x 4 in.)
Editor: This photograph, "Untitled (three men standing)" by Peter James Studio, features three men in suits. It feels very formal, almost like a diplomatic gathering. What do you see in this image? Curator: The suits, while suggesting formality, also act as a uniform, obscuring individuality. Notice the background details – the patterned door. What symbolic resonance do these elements evoke for you? Editor: They seem very purposefully placed. Do you think they could be trying to say something about power? Curator: Power, yes, but also perhaps the weight of institutions, tradition. It makes me wonder about the individual versus the collective, and how dress codes represent different things. Editor: I hadn’t thought about it that way. I guess there is a lot more to the picture than first meets the eye. Curator: Indeed, and that is the gift of visual symbols.
