Two designs for decorative panels in rococco style 1830 - 1897
Dimensions Overall: 19 1/2 x 13 5/16 in. (49.5 x 33.8 cm)
Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise designed these decorative panels in the Rococo style. We can see how the Rococo era was embodied by ornamental, theatrical and playful elements as it moved away from the rigid formality of the Baroque period. These designs reflect the socio-cultural values of the 18th century, in which elite status was closely tied to the lavish display of wealth and refined taste. Rococo art was typically commissioned and consumed by the aristocracy and upper class, and it was used to adorn private homes and public spaces. This style acted as an expression of their identity, as well as to maintain clear social distinctions. The images include elaborate, curving forms, botanical motifs and asymmetry. The style became a language of power and beauty, but also a reflection of a society on the brink of revolutionary change. While you look at the work, try to consider both the appeal and the issues with this kind of opulence.
