This “Border for head covering” was made with cotton and mirror by Kanbi. It's so joyful; the composition is like a series of patterned building blocks, stacked up, a little wonky and off kilter. You know, sometimes the best art comes from not trying to be perfect, letting the process guide you. Look at the ground, that delicious red—it's the stage for everything else. The embroidery has a tactile quality. The stitches are visible, each one a tiny decision, a little dance. The mirrored details really pop. They are like tiny disco balls reflecting light, adding another layer of depth. Check out the band of zig zags on the far left too! This piece reminds me a bit of the work of Ree Morton, who embraced the handmade, the imperfect, and the deeply personal. Art is a conversation across time, a dialogue of materials, ideas, and emotions. It’s less about answers and more about opening up possibilities.
