Adrianus Eversen created "Gebouwen aan het water" with graphite on paper. The preliminary sketch captures buildings alongside a waterway, seen from a slightly elevated perspective. The composition is defined by a series of vertical and horizontal lines that create a sense of architectural structure. Eversen plays with light and shadow by using varying degrees of graphite shading to evoke a tranquil waterside scene. Notice how the artist does not present a completed image but rather a suggestive framework, inviting the viewer to participate in the visual construction of the scene. This approach reflects an evolving interest in the period to challenge traditional artistic representation, shifting from detailed depiction to a more open, interpretive visual language. The sketch prompts us to consider not just the subject, but also the way in which our perceptions are shaped through the artist's deliberate use of form and line. The semiotic elements presented, are both representative and stand on their own.
