Editor: Here we have Claude Gillot's "The Beaver and the Ox," an undated etching. The ox seems so much larger than the beaver. How would you interpret this work? Curator: I notice first the etching process itself. It enabled the mass production of images, making art accessible beyond the elite. Consider, too, the materials: acid, metal plate, paper, ink. These speak to the burgeoning print market and a shift in art's consumption. What fable does it illustrate, and how does that narrative play into contemporary societal values? Editor: I see your point. It makes me think about the labor involved in creating and distributing these images. Thanks for this insight. Curator: And I am reminded how even seemingly simple images reveal complex systems of production and meaning.
