This photograph, Farciennes I (Chemin d'Aiseau), Belgium, was made by Witho Worms. The sepia tone gives everything a kind of melancholic, timeless feel, right? Like an old memory. Look at the texture of the slag heap, like a scar on the landscape, so big it could be a mountain, but man-made. The reflections in the water are so still and mirror-like, they add another layer of quietness. It's a bleak scene but there’s a strange beauty in the repetition of the vertical lines of the trees against the diagonal slope. Worms reminds me a bit of the Bechers, but with a deeper sense of place. It’s not just documentation, it’s a mood, a feeling of something lost and something stubbornly hanging on.
