Curatorial notes

Chris van der Windt made this etching, Bomen bij een boerderij, with ink on paper. It's a tiny thing, really, but feels so expansive. You can tell Windt wasn't just trying to copy what he saw; he was feeling it. The whole thing is a dance of light and dark, a kind of moody, atmospheric haze. Look at the way he's built up the textures, especially in the trees and the roof of the farmhouse. It’s like he’s not just describing a place, but also the feeling of being there, maybe on a gloomy day. It’s all in the details. See that one little spot of light on the wall of the house? It's like a secret, pulling you in. You can almost see Corot’s influence here, that love of quiet, everyday scenes. But Windt has his own voice. It's a conversation, art, always answering and questioning.
