Editor: Standing here in front of this earthy vessel… its origins are somewhat mysterious – simply attributed to Zande, no specific date – and crafted from ceramic earthenware. I'm struck by its primitive beauty. The form is so fundamental, and almost… primal. What feelings bubble up in you when you observe it? Curator: Primal, yes, exactly! It feels like it's emerged straight from the earth, doesn't it? The rough texture, the mottled coloring…it reminds me of ancient water jars. It almost breathes, and yet it sits so stoically. It evokes a kind of reverie for older times. I wonder, do those textured coils around the body suggest a woven basket to you too? Editor: Oh, interesting! Now that you point it out, those coils definitely look like an abandoned or fossilized basket pattern around the rounded vessel shape. What can you say about the process the artist used? Curator: Well, my gut tells me this wasn't perfectly formed on a wheel. Perhaps it’s built up from coils of clay – painstakingly layered, textured, imprinted, and fired. Each imperfection is precious, revealing the hand of the maker. I have the sense that making something beautiful can start simply, you know? No flashy kiln needed. Just hands, mud and a vision. Editor: Yes, its simplicity does add to its appeal! The idea that something beautiful can grow so organically is beautiful. Thanks for showing me what to see. Curator: My pleasure. Maybe that’s the trick of really looking… just let it seep into your own mud and watch something beautiful grow inside of you too!
