This untitled photograph was made by John Gossage. The color palette is muted, almost bleached, which makes me think about the passage of time and how photographs themselves age. Look at the hand holding the ice, it’s like a crystal ball, a prop, a way of framing the world. The other hand shielding the eyes suggests the sun is beating down, creating the conditions for the ice to melt, for the moment to dissolve. It’s like Gossage is saying that even as we try to grasp and hold onto things, they slip through our fingers. There's a kinship with artists like Ed Ruscha who find beauty in the mundane. Gossage reminds me that art isn't always about grand statements; sometimes it's about noticing the quiet poetry of everyday life and the inevitable changes that time brings.
