Here's a sketch by Niels Larsen Stevns, made without a date, using pencil on paper. The surface is alive with these quick, restless marks. I imagine Stevns with his sketchbook, trying to capture the essence of a biblical scene, that moment of transformation up on the mountain. What was he thinking about? Maybe how to depict the divine, or the human reaction to something beyond comprehension. Look at the way he uses these swirling lines to suggest light and energy radiating from the figures. It’s not about detail, but more about feeling, like a memory or a dream half-formed. It's got this raw, searching quality that I recognize in my own process. I love seeing an artist work through an idea, embrace the uncertainty, and allow the image to emerge through the act of drawing. The conversation is open and it's been going on for centuries.
