This is a pianoforte, crafted by Erard Frères, a name synonymous with innovation in piano manufacturing. While we don't have an exact date, instruments like this were status symbols. They represented not only wealth but also access to a rarefied world of culture and education. Consider the social dynamics of the time; these pianos often became the centrepiece in parlours, largely operated by women. For middle and upper-class women, musical skill was more than an accomplishment - it was a crucial part of their identity. Yet this access was also a gilded cage; their creative expression was often confined to the domestic sphere, making the pianoforte both a tool for, and a symbol of, their restricted agency. Feel the weight of each note played, and imagine the complex blend of freedom and constraint that accompanied each melody.

King Louis Napoleon ordered this sumptuous piano for his musical wife Hortense, who also played the harp and the harpsichord. It was intended for the concert hall at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The instrument was also a showpiece, made of many costly materials and decorated with gilt-bronze ornament (ormolu). When Louis Napoleon abdicated in 1810, he left the piano in the blue salon at the palace.
