Album of North African Photographs c. 19th century
Dimensions 28 Ã 43.5 Ã 7.5 cm (11 Ã 17 1/8 Ã 2 15/16 in.)
Curator: This is an album of North African photographs, taken by J. André Garrigues, but without precise dating. The dimensions are about 28 by 43.5 centimeters. Editor: My first thought is the sheer visual weight of whiteness against the neutral ground. It’s both luminous and somewhat oppressive. Curator: Exactly. The compositional choices in both photographs, with the subjects enveloped in light-colored clothing, emphasize form and texture—a semiotic blank slate ready for the viewer. Editor: I agree. It makes me reflect on the themes of identity and representation, and how visual elements create a sense of cultural distance but also invite us to project and imagine. Curator: In the end, it’s about the dance between what's shown and what remains elusive. Editor: Beautifully put. It really does linger in the mind, doesn’t it?
