Christian David Gebauer made this landscape with two cows with etching on paper. It’s interesting to consider the image in relation to the institutional context in which Gebauer was working. He was an animal painter for the Danish King. In the late 18th and early 19th century, agricultural reform was a hot topic in Denmark. New farming methods promised greater yields and higher profits. Elite artists often took up landscape painting as a way to comment on such themes. The image creates meaning through visual codes and historical associations. Cows can be symbols of agricultural innovation, or of old-fashioned pastoral life. This image is quite simple, even crude in style, so it’s hard to say definitively. As historians, we can delve deeper into the political and economic history of 19th-century Denmark, looking at newspapers, political pamphlets, and even farm records to understand the context in which this image was made. Art is always contingent on social and institutional context.
