Monogrammist DS created this panoramic landscape near Bergen in 1873, using graphite on paper. This is a simple, direct medium – just carbon transferred onto a cellulose support. The artist has used the graphite pencil to create a wide range of subtle tonal variations. Notice the fine, almost imperceptible lines that describe the distant mountains, contrasting with the denser, darker marks used to define the trees and foliage in the foreground. The varying pressure and density of the graphite creates a sense of depth and atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the landscape. Graphite, though easily accessible, demands a high degree of control. The artist’s skill is evident in the way he coaxes out a detailed image from such humble materials. The landscape itself, with its carefully rendered fields and dwellings, hints at a culture deeply connected to the land. It's a reminder that even the simplest materials can reveal complex relationships between humans and their environment.
