Figure II 2002

Robert Goodnough created Figure II with an unknown medium during a period of significant social and political change, notably influenced by post-war existentialism. This work invites us to consider the fragmentation of identity in a rapidly changing world. As we gaze upon the arrangement of strokes, do we see the echoes of fractured selves, pieced together in an attempt to form a whole? Goodnough once said that "art should reflect the underlying tensions of modern life." The muted color palette further emphasizes a sense of introspection and contemplation. Here, representation gives way to suggestion, urging us to confront the ambiguities of existence. Figure II serves as a mirror, reflecting our own struggles to define ourselves amidst the complexities of contemporary life. It captures both the vulnerability and the resilience of the human spirit.
