John Flaxman, a British sculptor and designer, created this moving image of the Adoration of the Magi. Flaxman came of age during the Enlightenment and, like many artists of his time, explored themes of reason, morality, and human potential. Here, he presents the scene of the three kings, the Magi, come to worship the newborn Christ. Mary is depicted as both regal and maternal. She is the mother of God but also a mother holding her child, while the Magi bow before her. The simplicity of the line and form directs our attention to the expressions of reverence and humility on the faces of the figures. Flaxman's style evokes a sense of timelessness. He strips away the baroque ornamentation of previous religious art for something austere and deeply felt. The artwork invites viewers to contemplate the narratives of faith, power, and humanity, and consider the potential for change that those from different walks of life might bring.
