Muirhead Bone made this drawing of Fifth Avenue at night in July 1923, and he did it with such a delicate touch. The tones of grey and black are so soft, it's like he's whispering the city onto the page. Look at how the buildings emerge from the fog, or is it the haze of streetlights? The artist uses this subtle gradations of tone to suggest depth. Up close, you can see the way the graphite catches the light, especially in those dense shadows that define the gothic cathedral looming in the background. The lines are like tiny hairs, all working together to build form. It's as if he is trying to get something down as quickly as possible, that the light might change at any moment. There's a real sense of atmosphere, like the city is breathing. I'm reminded of Whistler, in the way he captured London's foggy nights with such sensitivity. Art's just one big conversation across time, isn't it? This piece feels like a late night walk, full of fleeting impressions and a kind of quiet wonder.
