This scroll was made by Jianyin Xia, sometime between 1898 and 1983. The black ink dances on the off-white paper, each stroke a testament to the artist's hand, its hesitations and flourishes. Look closely, and you can almost feel the brush moving, a physical extension of Xia's thoughts. The texture of the ink varies, sometimes dense and opaque, other times thin and transparent, pooling in some areas, skipping in others. The characters aren't perfect, and it's the little imperfections that I find so appealing. It's about the movement and energy in the work. It reminds me of Cy Twombly’s scribbled paintings, not in style, but in its embrace of imperfection and process. Ultimately, the beauty of this piece lies in its ambiguity, its invitation to contemplate meaning beyond the literal.
