Editor: This piece is called Grain, by Colin Self. It's a silvery expanse, almost like looking at static. What can you tell me about it? Curator: Given the title and Self’s wider body of work, I see a focus on materiality, on the means of image production itself. It draws attention to the granular nature inherent in the photographic process, highlighting the materiality that constitutes the image. Does that shift your perspective? Editor: Absolutely, I hadn't considered the materiality of the image itself. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure. It's about seeing beyond the surface to the methods of creation.
