These "Advertisements" by Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries, are made with printed text and ornamentation. I'm imagining the artist creating an image that is both informative and visually appealing. What was it like to carefully select each typeface and arrange the text within the frame? I can almost see the artist debating the color choices, wanting to evoke a sense of trust and reliability. The use of borders reminds me of the Dutch Golden Age. De Vries is participating in a conversation about commerce and aesthetics. There is a dialogue between the two advertisements and the frame in which they exist. I see it as a balancing act. Each element serves its purpose. These works prompt me to reflect on the ways artists engage with the world around them, finding inspiration in unexpected places, and transforming ordinary materials into something meaningful.
