Robert Frank made this photographic work, Guggenheim 10--funeral, Carolinas, sometime in the mid-twentieth century. It’s a series of black and white film strip images, arranged in horizontal rows, offering glimpses into what feels like a deeply personal and culturally significant event. The texture of the film itself is palpable. You can almost feel the graininess, the slight imperfections that come with analog photography. Each frame is like a fragmented memory, a fleeting moment captured in time. The high contrast in the image heightens the emotional intensity, casting stark shadows and illuminating key details. In one of the strips, there’s a close-up of faces, perhaps mourners. The way the light catches their expressions, the subtle nuances of grief and reflection, is incredibly moving. It reminds me of Nan Goldin’s work, intimate and raw, with a similar exploration of community and shared experience. Art, like memory, is never fixed. It’s always in flux, inviting us to bring our own perspectives and emotions to the table.
