Kristi opstandelse 1933 - 1934

Curator: Welcome. We're standing before Niels Larsen Stevns' preparatory drawing, "Kristi opstandelse," created between 1933 and 1934. It’s a compelling sketch rendered in ink on paper and is currently held here at the SMK. Editor: My first thought is that it looks more like a deconstruction than a depiction. Very skeletal, like x-rays of ideas fighting to take form on that grid. Intensely graphic, too! Curator: Indeed. The grid provides a structure, almost an intellectual scaffolding, against the raw energy of the composition. Stevns seems to be wrestling with form. We are privy to his artistic thinking and the emotional implications here. Editor: Thinking made visible, literally. What I find intriguing is the sense of restraint coupled with explosion – all those penned up emotions and concepts behind a rather formal diagram! Curator: Note the use of line: at times frenetic, at others controlled, hinting perhaps at the internal struggle represented by Christ’s resurrection itself. Consider the symbolism inherent in resurrection stories, of transformation. This drawing could capture that. Editor: Exactly! All those restless, searching strokes... it makes me consider what "rising" truly means here. Is it breaking free? As an act of defiance? Also, what's with the numbers on the side? Was the artist sizing things up to be, like, perfectly symmetrical in some final version? Curator: That's certainly plausible, but let’s not overlook the psychological resonance of these images. Many interpret religious art, whether they consider themselves believers or not. The image taps into deep feelings about loss, faith, hope and the nature of renewal, of cyclical time, which may explain our feelings when viewing such depictions. Editor: Renewal, yes. What looks like an almost chaotic jumble begins to coalesce into the energy of renewal. I am strangely drawn in to keep looking to unravel. So, it really pulls you, and almost makes you reflect about a topic you didn't consider. It has this odd spiritual dimension within all the chaos. It is strangely affecting despite its preliminary form. Curator: Absolutely, a perfect case in how what appears simple actually gives depth and complexity that resonate far beyond its creation.
