This is a drawing called Salome by Frans Stamkart. Here, the monochromatic tones and soft, flowing lines immediately capture your attention. The figure of Salome is not rigidly defined but seems to emerge from and merge into the surrounding darkness. Stamkart's technique here is intriguing. The forms are built up through delicate gradations of tone rather than sharp outlines. This use of chiaroscuro, playing with light and shadow, creates a dreamlike quality, as though the scene exists in a realm between reality and imagination. The horizontal lines in the background could represent water or a misty landscape. This creates a sense of depth, yet also flattens the image, pushing Salome towards us. This push and pull of depth and flatness destabilizes our sense of space. It challenges fixed perspectives, inviting multiple interpretations. The formal elements work together to create a scene that is as much about psychological space as it is about physical presence, making it a powerful visual experience.

Because of its biblical subject matter, this drawing by Frans Stamkart can be characterised as Symbolist art. However, the characterisation applies less to the technique, for which Stamkart developed an unorthodox approach of erasing certain passages in chalk. As a result, a soft light seems to break through behind the figure, giving shimmering edges to the swirling clouds, gown and veils.
