Jacobus Schijnvoet created this etching of ‘Gezicht op het kasteel te Heukelum’ without specifying its date. Schijnvoet was active during the Dutch Golden Age, a time of unprecedented economic, scientific, and artistic growth in the Netherlands. However, this era was also deeply entwined with colonialism and the exploitation of resources and people in other parts of the world. Landscapes such as this were often commissioned by the wealthy merchant class, who sought to display their affluence and power. While seemingly a straightforward depiction of a castle, the image subtly reflects the social hierarchy of the time. The castle, a symbol of authority and wealth, dominates the scene, while the surrounding landscape is neatly arranged, suggesting control and ownership. How does viewing such imagery today challenge or reinforce our understanding of the past? What untold stories lie within the frame of this elegant etching?
