This title page for King Frederik V’s journey through Denmark and Norway was made in 1749 by Poul Isac Grønvold, using etching. This printmaking technique involves drawing an image into a waxy ground on a metal plate, then immersing it in acid, which bites into the exposed lines. The plate is then inked and printed, transferring the image to paper. The linear quality of etching lends itself well to detailed scenes, as seen in the landscape surrounding the regal inscription. Look closely, and you can see the subtle gradations of tone. These are achieved by varying the density and depth of the etched lines. The process requires careful control of the materials – the acid’s strength, the timing of the bite, and the pressure of the printing press. In its time, etching was a relatively efficient method of image production, but still required considerable skill. This print acted as a kind of advance publicity, a royal progress report for the literate public. It reminds us that even seemingly straightforward images are the product of complex social and material circumstances.
