Joris Hoefnagel made this watercolor on paper, "Plate 19: A Damselfish and Other Fish, Including Two "Coracinis," sometime before 1600. Hoefnagel’s masterful manipulation of watercolor imbues these studies of sea life with a scientific understanding of the natural world. Notice how he used thin washes of diluted pigment to build up layer upon layer of subtle gradations that define the scales, fins, and bodies of the fish. The detailed, precise brushwork and stippling capture the texture and form of each fish. The medium invites close inspection, allowing us to appreciate the level of detail and skill involved in its creation. Hoefnagel was deeply involved in the scientific culture of his time. His meticulous approach reflects a keen observation of the natural world. In this work, the artist combines the traditions of natural history illustration with the aesthetic values of fine art. He bridges the gap between science and art.
