This beaded tab, crafted by an anonymous maker, presents an intriguing intersection of cultures and histories. The fleur-de-lis, prominently displayed, is a stylized lily, historically associated with French royalty and, by extension, French colonial power in North America. The use of beadwork points to Native American artistic traditions, especially those involving trade with Europeans. We can therefore consider how the visual codes in this object reflect cultural exchange and adaptation. Where was it made? By whom? And in what circumstances? These are difficult questions that demand further historical research. The fleur-de-lis, which was used to signify power, is here reconfigured within a Native American artistic practice. It allows us to reflect on the complex dynamics of colonization, cultural appropriation, and artistic expression. It prompts us to consider how symbols can be reinterpreted and reclaimed. This also highlights the importance of further archival and ethnographic investigation to fully appreciate its significance.
