Atelier Wertheim made this small portrait of an unknown boy. The photographer captures the essence of childhood—an unrepeatable moment of playful performance. I can almost see the studio, with its painted backdrops and carefully chosen props. I wonder, what was it like for the boy to be positioned just so? Did he understand the importance of this moment? Did the grown-ups have to cajole him? Notice the gentle light that falls on his face, how it makes him look slightly melancholy even though he seems to be in a playful mood. The photographer, Wertheim, no doubt knew how to pose a subject, how to use light and shadow to create a mood. Look at the way the lines of the coat contrast with the curve of the cane, almost as if they are performing a duet. Photography and painting share a common goal, both capturing a fleeting moment in time. And yet, each medium brings its own unique set of possibilities. By considering the choices made by artists such as Wertheim, we can gain insight into the endless possibilities of how art can be used to represent our world.
