Editor: Here we have Boris Vallejo’s "Siren Song," painted in 1979, looks like oils to me. The fantasy is off the charts. What a vivid color palette! The overall composition feels both sensual and a little unsettling. What do you make of this piece? Curator: The enduring appeal lies precisely in that unsettling sensuality. Consider the title, “Siren Song.” Sirens are, of course, figures of fatal attraction. Vallejo here gives us not the monstrous hag but beings of great beauty; note the classical facial features, but one is seemingly cold and reptilian, the other exuding warmth and life, they are locked in a fatal embrace. Consider that contrast. Is this not symbolic of an inner turmoil? Editor: That’s a great observation. I see the symbolism now in the dual figures…almost like two sides of the same coin? What do the wings represent, and even the tails? Curator: Ah, the wings. Certainly freedom, but also a transcendent, possibly dangerous nature. What do you make of the creature’s tail(s)? Consider traditional symbolism; the serpent, coiling, constricted to the earth but ever poised to strike. What tale does Vallejo tell us with their inclusion here? The natural impulses versus perhaps what our conscious brain perceives is an obvious distinction in play, right? Editor: That tension definitely rings true! There’s a clear push and pull between danger and desire. Thanks, I can see that siren’s call now loud and clear! Curator: Indeed. Images possess memory. They borrow meaning from history and deposit that significance into our own time, constantly reshaped by our personal interpretation. It speaks volumes to the cultural undercurrents that endure through ages and into contemporary discourse. It makes one contemplate what images of today are going to say about us a few decades on.
