This photograph captures the Gezicht op de Catharinakerk te Etten-Leur with an approach that feels like a study in light and form. The sepia tones create a really subtle palette, allowing the texture of the brickwork and the volume of the church to define the space. The photograph is all about process in its own way. Take the way the light gently falls across the right-hand brick building. It's a really nice study in the building blocks of representation. It’s the kind of mark making that feels so elemental, so close to the basics of artmaking. It's easy to overlook the range that’s possible in a limited palette, but here, the artist makes it sing. It reminds me a little of some of Agnes Martin's quieter grids in its soft gradations, though Martin, of course, was thinking in an abstract way. Like Martin's work, there is a lot to find in this image if you give yourself time to look, and to let it resonate.
