Luigi Vanvitelli 1674 - 1755

Pier Leone Ghezzi rendered this portrait of Luigi Vanvitelli using pen and brown ink over traces of graphite. Notice the stark contrast between the detailed rendering of Vanvitelli’s features and the looser, more gestural depiction of his attire. The meticulous hatching and cross-hatching create a sense of volume and depth, particularly in the folds of his coat and the contours of his face, whilst his legs are represented in light hatching. The controlled, precise lines create a sense of order and intellect, mirroring the subject's profession as an architect. But, Ghezzi playfully subverts this seriousness. Vanvitelli’s pose, with his slightly protruding stomach and nonchalant gaze, introduces an element of informality and approachability. The drawing’s composition, combined with the artist’s technical skill, achieves a delicate balance between formality and spontaneity. It captures not only the physical likeness of Vanvitelli but also hints at his character and standing within the cultural milieu of his time.
