Soledad Sevilla created this hypnotic artwork entitled 'Maybe Later' using layered, translucent planes of colour. Doesn’t it make you wonder about the endless possibilities of a surface? I mean, you can almost feel Soledad standing in front of her canvas, maybe even turning it around and around, patiently building up these incredible layers of dark reds and blacks. I imagine she was thinking about interior and exterior worlds, playing with the architecture of perception, and that push-and-pull between light and shadow. It’s kind of like she's asking, "How do we really see?” The dark and heavy frame contrasts with the interior glow, a soft light that flickers in and out of existence. The dark frame gives the red vertical panels the appearance of looking into a dark void. Her work reminds me of Agnes Martin's subtle geometries, and how both artists use repetition to create these meditative, immersive experiences. Painting is an ongoing conversation, and artists like Soledad inspire me to keep pushing the boundaries of what a painting can be.
