This drawing of four men with sleds walking by a glacier fissure, or Sermime kûp Kordlornerssua, was created by Lars Møller. Born in 1842, Møller lived through a period of intense change and increasing contact between Greenland and Europe. The image offers a glimpse into the realities of life in Greenland, depicting the labor and travel that were part of daily existence. The men are dwarfed by the landscape, suggesting a narrative about the relationship between humans and nature. Møller was of both Danish and Greenlandic descent, and this heritage perhaps provided him with a unique perspective on the cultural dynamics of his time. What does it mean to represent your own community? How does one navigate the complexities of cultural representation when one is both an insider and an outsider? Møller’s art invites us to consider these questions of identity, as well as the narratives we tell ourselves about exploration, and belonging.
