Else Berg made this woodcut, "Two Figures in a Village Street," and wow, it's like she's carving out a world with just black and white. The texture is built right into the process! Check out the figure in the foreground, how Berg uses these heavy, deliberate cuts to define form. It's not just about what she includes but what she leaves out, the negative space buzzing with energy. Then you've got that other figure, almost floating in the background, just enough there to make you wonder. The whole composition is so graphic, so immediate! It reminds me a bit of some of the German Expressionists, like Kirchner, who were also playing with woodcuts to capture a raw, emotional edge. But Berg brings her own sensibility, a kind of quirky, personal vision. Art's always a conversation, right? Artists riffing off each other, finding their own voice in the mix.
