This Head Covering was made by Tai Daeng, and I am fascinated by how different art forms can teach us about seeing and feeling in new ways. The colors feel very grounded, the reds and purples are deep and earthy, which makes the other colors really sing. Looking closely, I can see how the colored threads are layered to create diamonds and other geometric shapes, this adds texture and depth. The fringe at the bottom feels like a playful addition, like the piece is winking at us, the loose threads give the piece movement. I find myself drawn to the row of shapes above the fringe, each one slightly different, these are the equivalent of brushstrokes in a painting. This head covering reminds me of Sheila Hicks’s small weavings, where each piece feels like a concentrated burst of color and texture, a testament to the endless possibilities of artmaking. This piece encourages us to see the world with fresh eyes, embracing the beauty of imperfection.
