Bernadette Resha made Love of Fall with a variety of materials to really conjure the season of change. I like how the artist has made these almost collage-like surfaces. The texture in this piece is so alive, isn't it? There are these little circles of paint, thick and raised up off the surface, like gobs of color just plopped down. And then there are the leaves, captured in these rectangular frames, like little windows onto another world. It’s all about layering and building up, a process of addition that feels very intuitive. In a weird way it reminds me of Kurt Schwitters, with that Dadaist sensibility, grabbing whatever’s at hand and making it into something new. Like Schwitters, Resha isn't afraid to mix it up and make a painting that’s also a bit of a sculpture. This piece invites you to see art as a playground of ideas.
