This is "Natuurkundige experimenten," made by Nicolaas van Frankendaal, likely during the 18th century, using engraving. It is not so much a work of art, as a page from an illustrated manual. The focus here is on the dissemination of scientific knowledge through the printing press. Look closely, and you'll see that the primary material is paper. A copper plate would have been prepared by a highly skilled engraver, who meticulously cut away lines, to hold ink. This plate was then pressed against the paper. The process, relatively recent at the time, allowed for identical copies to be circulated widely, and at a low cost. Consider how the crispness of the engraved lines lends itself to the representation of complex equipment. Also, reflect on the social context of the print. It was made possible by a system of labor, trade, and capitalist distribution, and how it contributes to the advancement of scientific education. The manual democratized knowledge, taking it out of the exclusive domain of the university. This engraving embodies the era’s commitment to progress through accessible education.
