This small, circular relief, possibly depicting the Sacrifice of Iphigenia, was made in the 15th or 16th century by the artist known as Master IO. F.F., likely in Italy. It is made of cast and chased bronze. The bronze’s inherent qualities of strength and malleability have allowed the artist to depict the drama of this scene in miniature, using tools to carefully sculpt the metal, bringing out the figures and their expressions. The artist has also used the contrast of light and shadow to create a sense of depth and movement. The artist may have been trained in the tradition of goldsmithing, but used his refined skills to create small-scale bronze reliefs. The investment of labor involved in production may seem disproportionate to its size, but that is part of the point. The level of skill and artistry evident here challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and craft. And perhaps it also carries a social critique. The subject matter is certainly a cautionary tale about social power, and the injustice it can inflict.
