This festival head covering was made anonymously, we don’t know exactly when, or by whom, but its joyful exuberance speaks volumes. I love how this piece isn’t shy about laying it on thick. The patterns, with their riot of color and embellishment, create a real sense of abundance and festivity. There’s something about the way the colors vibrate against each other, like they're almost too much, but in the best way possible. Look at the way the metallic embellishments catch the light – it’s as if the whole thing is shimmering. And then there’s the scale – it's big! You can almost imagine it draped over someone’s head. To me, that circle of pink in the top left corner, it feels like the sun, radiating out from the center. It reminds me of the work of Etel Adnan, who also uses color and pattern to evoke a sense of place and memory. This isn’t just a head covering, it's a whole world.
