Sébastien Leclerc I created this print of a priest and two altar servers before an altar in France in the late 17th or early 18th century. It shows the Catholic mass, focusing on the moment after communion. The print offers insight into the religious life of the time, but also the institutional frameworks that shaped it. The architecture, the clothing, and the rituals, all speak to the power and authority of the Catholic Church in French society. Leclerc, as an artist, was part of a network of craftsmen, patrons, and institutions that helped to disseminate these images and reinforce these beliefs. Note the text on the print which refers to the ‘Resurrection’. To fully understand a work like this, we would need to delve into the history of the Catholic Church in France, the role of religious imagery, and the social function of art. By examining these resources, we can begin to understand how art both reflects and shapes the world around it.
