Beautiful painting (diptych) 1991

This 100 x 110 cm diptych, titled “Beautiful painting,” was made by Oleg Holosiy, though we don't know exactly when. There's a real energy in Holosiy's mark-making. The orange hues against the dark blue feel both vibrant and a bit unsettling. It’s as if he's captured a fleeting moment, a kind of dream or memory. Looking closely, you can see the texture – it’s not just flat color, but layers built up, perhaps quickly, giving it a sense of urgency. The way the paint is applied around the figures suggests movement. Take the figure on the right playing the flute; the lines are loose, almost scribbled, yet they define the form so well. It’s this tension between control and freedom that makes it so compelling. Holosiy’s work reminds me a bit of early Philip Guston - that same willingness to embrace the raw and the imperfect. It’s a conversation across time, a reminder that art is always evolving, always questioning.
